3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeler is ideal for rough terrain and provides the most comfortable ride for your infant. They are also more convenient to move and push than a four-wheel buggy especially those with fabric sling seats or seat units that are placed comfortably in the frame, offering the best geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are very stable, making them an excellent option for off-roading (especially when they are equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). These types of buggys typically have large front tires that can handle bumps, kerbs and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheels in the front to give you extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It's important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than their 4-wheeled counterparts which means they could fall more easily. That said, the best 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with perfect geometry and engineering to make them very stable in all conditions. They should be able turn at a whim and be easy to steer with one hand. They also feature the ability to rotate 360o on the front wheel, which makes them perfect for navigating difficult terrain.

For surfaces that are extremely challenging you should look for models with air-filled tyres which are also referred to as pneumatic tyres. They are made to handle roads that are not paved and can deal with dirt, gravel, and more. This design delivers an lower centre of gravity at the perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you should never underestimate how often you'll be doing this as a new parent!)

Seating

There are a myriad of options for seating in 3 wheelers. The carrycot that comes with it is perfect for newborns (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lie-flat bed that can be used both in and out of the buggy). Older children and toddlers will love the spacious and padded seat unit with adjustable ventilation. The seats do not fully recline, but they can be adjusted to the lowest position. This should still allow your child to have plenty of headroom and space.

A sling made of fabric is also available. It is advantageous in that it is located inside the frame instead of on top as a seat that is modular. This results in a lower centre of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this type of seat negotiated these challenges.

Alongside a huge shopping basket, this kind of buggy typically has some pretty useful features such as an extended 50+ UV hood, an easy to use brake pedal and some bright, game-changing lights that come up from the handlebars and can be placed directly in front of the occupants to ensure their safety when they are tackling difficult terrain.

If you're looking for a buggy that can grow with your family it's the sport(tm) is a first in the world that can take in the newborn, and later be modified to fit three or more children as they grow, all within one footprint.

Storage

The 3 wheel running buggy-wheeled frame makes the buggy more sturdy to push one-handed and also perfect for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. However, it means that the basket won't hold as much as a four-wheeled buggy.

A top-quality ATP will come with pneumatic tyres, a padded grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It should also be equipped to carry a carrycot and car seat and you can use it right from the time you are born.

MFM's reviewers have found that the 3 wheeled buggies-wheeler frame won't pass through all doors in their homes, or small car booties - make sure to check the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded before buying if you're worried about space.

It's worth looking into 3-wheelers that can accommodate two (or even lightest 3 wheel stroller!) seats once your family grows. They are the best of both worlds and future proof your money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most popular. It can be used from the day of birth as a single buggy, and later transformed into twin buggies once your baby is walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more enjoyable. They are commonly found on pushchairs, such as the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath discovered to provide "an exceptional ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on it made it easy to navigate kerbs and cobbles.

These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and require air pressure topped up regularly. They are also more susceptible to punctures than foam tyres. So it is essential that you have repair kits along with a spare inner tube and pump on hand when you are you're out and about in your buggy.

PU tyres are typically found on pushchairs as they are a cheaper option than tyres filled with air, but they are just as durable. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and soft feel. They also slide on flat and tidied surfaces.

You can usually identify the distinction between air-filled and PU tires by running your hands over them, if it feels hard then it's a rubber tyre, and if it slides then it's a PU. You can also check if your buggy is fitted with PU tyres by sliding them across a flat, clean surface. They should roll smoothly and fit snugly into the wheel hubs.

Foam tyres can handle the rough terrain of high-performance buggies. The drawback is that the foam may expand and cause your buggy to feel less stable, as it loses its springy quality. You'll also find that these kinds of tyres can often be noisy as they generate a lot of noise as you turn and navigate your way around the town.
