3 Wheeler Buggies

A three wheeler pushchair-wheeled buggy is ideal for off-road terrain and provides the most comfortable ride for infants. They can also be easier to move and push than a four-wheeler, especially those with fabric sling seats or seats that are set snugly in the frame, delivering the best geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled vehicles are very stable, and this makes them a great option for off-roading (especially when equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They usually have large front wheels that can deal well with kerbs and bumps as well as rough ground. Some have a lockable wheels on the front for additional stability while driving on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that lightweight 3 wheel stroller-wheel buggies may have a lower centre of gravity than models with four wheels, which can mean that they can tip over more easily. However, the most reliable 3-wheel buggies have the an ideal geometry and design to ensure they are stable in all weather conditions. They should be able to turn at a whim, be easy to steer with just one hand and have 360o swivelling front wheels that makes them great for maneuvering and navigating challenging terrain.

For really tricky surfaces you should look for a model with air-filled tyres which are also referred to as pneumatic tyres. They are designed to handle non-paved tracks and are able to deal with rocks, mud, and so on. Many all-terrain buggies feature an swivelling front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when dealing with extremely rough ground too.

A 3-wheel stroller is a good option for runners and those who like to walk fast and uphill, especially in the event that you're planning to connect a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent example. It features a flat-reclining seat with 5-point harness and plenty of storage space for all your equipment (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's light and compact, and is suitable for use starting at birth. It can be used with the car seat or carrycot. If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle difficult terrain then you want one with large wheels. They can handle grass, cobbles and dirt tracks while providing a smooth ride for all passengers. They are also great for jogging because they're equipped with suspension and are simple to get up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they are quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy to use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheeler has 16 rear wheels, and a lockable swivel front wheel making it extremely maneuverable. It has air-filled tyres which require pumping up every now and then. It can accommodate children up until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler loved the design of the seat, and she found it easy to steer even with her three-year-old child on the board.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It comes with a movable handlebar, a high-quality hood that provides 50+ UV protection, and a high-quality hood. It is also easy to move kerbs up and down and fits in a the boot of a car that is small. It can be used as a stroller with a carrycot for newborns or toddlers.

Fabric sling seats are tucked inside the frame of the buggie instead of over it like modular seats. This design provides a lower centre of gravity and a perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you cannot think about how often you'll be doing that as new parents!)

Seating

There are many options for seating in three wheelers. For a newborn it is possible to use the included carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a comfortable and cozy lie-flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) and older infants and toddlers can use the parent or world-facing seat unit that is roomy and padded and does have adjustable ventilation. The seats are not able to recline fully, but they can be lowered to the lowest point. This should allow your child plenty of room and headroom.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It offers the advantage of being set snugly inside the frame, rather than over the top of a modular seat and this delivers a much lower centre of gravity as well as a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push especially over bumpy terrain or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath was impressed with the way this kind of seat handled these challenges.

In addition to a big shopping basket, this kind of buggy generally has quite useful features, such as an extendable 50+ UV hood, a simple brake pedal and some games-changing visibility lights that appear from the handlebar and can be placed in front of the passengers to ensure their safety when tackling tricky terrain.

Stores

The 3-wheeled frame makes the buggy more stable to push with one hand, and it's also great for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. However, it also means that the shopping basket can't hold as much as a 4-wheeler buggy.

A top-quality ATP will have excellent suspension, pneumatic tyres and a padded handle for your comfort. It should be able to accept a carrycot or car seat, which means you can use it right from birth.

MFM's reviewers found that the 3-wheeler frames couldn't fit through their home's doors or car boot. If you're concerned about space, make sure you check the dimensions when the buggy is folded prior to purchasing.

Look for a 3 wheel baby Buggy-wheeler with 2 (or 3 wheel baby stroller!) seats. This is the best option for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the best of these and can be used as a single seat from day dot and later converts to a twin 3 wheel stroller buggies when your baby starts walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more enjoyable. These are found on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said provided "an outstanding ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres of the Phil and Ted's Sport made it easy for her to negotiate the kerbs and other obstacles.

These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and will need to have their air pressure regularly topped up. These tyres are more prone to punctures, and it is recommended to always carry a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube when you're out and about.

PU tyres can be found on more pushchairs than the air-filled tyres but they are still just as sturdy. You can recognise PU tire treads by their matte appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also slide well on uneven and tied surfaces.

If you rub your hands over the tyres you can tell if they are rubber or PU. If it feels as if it is sliding then it is a rubber or PU. You can also check that your buggy has PU tyres by sliding the tyres over a clean, flat surface - they'll be able to roll easily and fit snugly into their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are often used in high-performance buggies and joggers since they are able to cope with the rough terrain associated with this type of pushchair. The downside is that the foam may shrink and make your buggy feel less stable, since it loses its springy nature. The tyres can also be noisy, as they make lots of noise when you turn and navigate around the town.
